The last in a series of four artist books memorializing those who die while homeless in Minnesota, “Homeland: 2024 Registry” adds the names of those who died in 2024 to the Homeland cemetery.
Using the same map from the 2022 Homeland Registry, the 2024 book assigns each individual to a section in the imaginary cemetery.
In 2024 the list of the deceased, made available during the 2024 Homeless Memorial March & Service, included 109 people. An unnamed baby was one of them. Undoubtedly the number is actually higher, since it’s difficult to track across the entire state all those who die while homeless.
Although I believe it remains vital to memorialize those who die while homeless in Minnesota, I’ve come to realize that limited edition artist books are not the most effective medium for sharing this information. In 2024 I initiated a Kickstarter campaign to build a virtual cemetery that anyone with access to the Internet can visit. The Homeland website launched in December, concurrent with the 2024 Homeless Memorial March & Service. Visitors can submit the name of someone who has died while homeless, share a story and/or light a candle for those who are listed in Homeland.
